Bennie Lee Lake, Jr. of 13 Eve Lake Drive departed this life Friday, February 12, 2010 in Durham. A native of Asheville he was a son of the late Bennie Lee Lake, Sr. and the late Dorothy Mae Allen. Bennie Lee was a 1962 graduate of Stephens-Lee High School, a graduate of Shaw University and was inducted into the Hall of Fame at both schools. He worked with Wiltwyck School for Boys and Graham School for Children in New York where he played pro basketball with the Harlem Astronauts and the Harlem Globetrotters. In North Carolina he worked with the Boys Club of Asheville from 1974 -1975, the Swannanoa Valley Development Center where he retired after 30 years of employment. He was vice president of the Stephens-Lee Alumni Assoc., founder and past president of the Stephens-Lee Hall of Fame Committee, president of Castle On The Hill, Inc., a member of the Elks Fawndale Lodge and past member of Partners Unlimited. He co-wrote Stephens-Lee Bears Sports Heroes book with Johnny Bailey, started an athletic dept. at Kepp School 2005-2007. He was currently president of Upfront Management Sport where he and Sherman Williams started basketball and baseball programs with the children in public housing developments. Bennie Lee was a wonderful husband, loving father and brother. He would go out of his way to help anyone in the community, and really liked working with children trying his best to keep them out of trouble. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Robin Edwards Lake, sons; Bennie E. Lake (Darlene) of Bronx, NY and Keynon T. Lake (Candice) of Asheville; daughters, Demetria Flynn and Bridgett Brown of White Plains, NY; brother, Melvin Allen (Belinda) of Asheville; sisters, Linda Covington (George) of Detroit, MI, Linda Grand (Greg) and Beatrice Alexander of Asheville; godmother, Dorothy Ware of Asheville; grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Melvin and Beatrice Payton; sisters, Darlene Allen and Bwana Edgerton. Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church where he was a Deacon, Trustee, member of the Welcome Committee, Development Committee Team, Survey and Building Committee, Board of Directors Mt. Zion Community Development Corp., and Counsel of Elders Rights of Passage. Dr. John H. Grant will officiate, burial will be in Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 until 8 p.m. in the chapel of Hart Funeral Service and other times at the residence.
